what we can learn from the cheer team about branding

It is More Than Pom-Poms

My daughter is a cheerleader.

From the outside, it might look like perfect makeup, hair bows, and halftime routines that make you wonder if someone spiked the Gatorade with extra sparkle. But from the inside — from the bleachers, the sidelines, and the mother’s heart watching it all — I’ve seen so much more.

I’ve seen how cheer teaches leadership, visibility, energy, and the importance of showing up when it matters most. And yes — it even taught me something about branding.

Cheer Isn’t Just About the Spotlight — It’s About Support

What many see (but may not think about) is that cheerleaders show up when no one else wants to.

It’s 102 degrees on the field? They’re there, perfect ponytails intact.
It’s freezing at a late-night away game? Still there, shaking teeth but not spirits.
Win or lose — They bring energy like it’s game day every day.

A great brand does the same. It doesn't just shine in the spotlight — it supports the people around it. It lifts others up. It adds value whether or not it’s center stage.

Branding isn’t about being loud — it’s about being consistent and contagious in your energy. (Bonus: No glitter or face tattoo required.)

Consistency Is Key — On the Field and In Branding

One of the first things I noticed about cheer? Every uniform, bow, and color-coordinated detail is exactly the same across the team. No rogue sparkles, no mismatched socks (well… almost never).

Why? Because consistency matters. It tells the audience, “We’re a team. We’re professional. We show up together.”

Brands work the same way. When your messaging, visuals, and personality are consistent across every touchpoint, people recognize you instantly. Your audience knows what to expect — and that builds trust.

Just like a squad that looks sharp under the Friday Night Lights, a brand that presents itself consistently becomes stronger, more memorable, and impossible to ignore.

Teamwork Makes the Stunts Work — And the Brand Too

Watching my daughter’s cheer squad nail a stunt is like watching a well-oiled machine… or a human game of Jenga. Everyone has a role: the bases, the flyers, the spotters. No one person is more important than the others — if one link falters, the whole stunt could tumble.

Brands work the same way. Every touchpoint, every team member, every piece of messaging matters. One weak link can confuse your audience or dilute your impact. A strong brand, like a strong cheer stunt, depends on collaboration, trust, and every person showing up fully for the team.

Consistency, confidence, and energy matter — but teamwork makes it all possible.

Cheer Builds Confidence and Community

My daughter has gained more than balance and chants — she’s gained courage.

Cheer taught her how to walk into a room, stand tall, and lead. It’s given her friendships, responsibility, and a sense of identity within the larger school community.

Brands need this too.
A brand that feels confident and connected naturally draws others in.
A brand that cheers for others — not just itself — builds real community.

Great brands don’t just tell people who they are. They remind people who they can be. And sometimes, that requires a little pomp, a little circumstance, and yes… a few high kicks under the Friday Night Lights.

Showing Up Boldly Is Part of the Work

Cheer is physical. It’s expressive. It’s sometimes scary.
You step up, raise your voice, hit your mark — and you do it in front of people.

Sound familiar?

A strong brand knows when to take up space.Whether you’re speaking on a stage, pitching a client, or putting your brand in the public eye — it takes nerve. But that boldness, that presence, is what creates connection.

And sometimes, just like a mistimed backflip, showing up boldly is hilarious, messy, and unforgettable — and people remember it anyway.

Energy Is Contagious

The louder and more positive the squad, the more the crowd gets into it. Branding is the same: when your message has clarity and energy, your audience gets behind it.

Your vibe isn’t just your style — it’s your strategy.

What energy is your brand putting into the world?

Final Thought:

Watching my daughter cheer has reminded me what it looks like to show up — not just for yourself, but for a larger purpose. To use your voice, build others up, and stay visible even when things get tough.

And that, to me, is branding done right.
